A white buffalo calf with a dark nose and eyes was born on June 4 in the Yellowstone National park's Lamar Valley. Its birth fulfills a prophecy for the Lakota people.
Dancing, drumming, singing and sharing the woman who brought a message of reassurance during hard times in this celebratory and spiritually significant Native American ceremony.
"The birth of this calf is both a blessing and warning. We must do more," said Chief Arvol Looking Horse, the spiritual leader of the Lakota, Dakota and the Nakota Oyate in South Dakota, and the 19th keeper of the sacred White Buffalo Calf Woman Pipe and Bundle.
Long ago, Looking Horse said, there was a time when food was disappearing, bison were scarce, and the people were sick and hungry. Tribes were looking for
buffalo near what is now known as Devil’s Tower, when the White Buffalo Calf Woman presented herself to two scouts.
The next day, the White Buffalo Calf Woman appeared again, like she promised, and brought the sacred red-stone pipe and bundle and showed the people ways to pray to the creator and find food. She shared with the people that she would return as a white buffalo calf with a black nose, black eyes, and black hooves.
The birth of the white buffalo calf holds special significance to American Indians ~ especially the Oceti Sakowin (The People of the Seven Council Fires, also known as the Lakota, Dakota and Nakota, or the ‘Sioux’). It is a monumental moment for change and coming home to create better energies for all, and for the teachings and prophecy of the White Buffalo Calf Woman.
She gifted the people a sacred bundle containing the White Buffalo Calf Pipe, which still exists to this day and is kept by Chief Arvol Looking Horse of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe. She appeared and left, changing from a White Buffalo Calf Woman into a white buffalo calf, then changed in color from white to black, to yellow, then finally, red. Prophetically, it is said that the White Buffalo Calf Woman will return at the end of an age, and she will appear as a white buffalo calf.
Chief Looking Horse named the calf Wakan Gli ~ relaying "sacred come home" in Native American.
